Craton Destruction Induced by Drastic Drops in Lithospheric Mantle Viscosity

چکیده
Abstract The disruption of the mantle roots cratons is common after cratonization. Craton destruction, which characterized by severe lithospheric thinning, extensive thrust and extensional deformation, basin filling, intense thermal activities, relatively rare generally attributed to intensely reduced viscosity contrasts between root underlying asthenosphere. However, extent required contrast remains unclear. North China craton (NCC) a typical example partially destroyed craton, with its eastern part experiencing destruction in Early Cretaceous. In this study, we measured water content clinopyroxene phenocrysts Middle Jurassic mantle‐derived, weakly alkaline volcanic rocks from Shanhaiguan area. Our data those previous studies show that NCC contained substantial amounts (650–2,900 ppm) before destruction. addition, continuous supply subducted Paleo‐Pacific slab resulted more hydrous (up ca. 9,000 during asthenosphere (with an average 3.7 × 10 18 Pa s) were 2–8 0.3–2 respectively. study indicates drastic drop viscosity, controlled synergic effects high elevated temperature, induce

متن کاملAbnormal lithium isotope composition from the ancient lithospheric mantle beneath the North China Craton
Lithium elemental and isotopic compositions of olivines in peridotite xenoliths from Hebi in the North China Craton provide direct evidence for the highly variable δ(7)Li in Archean lithospheric mantle. The δ(7)Li in the cores of olivines from the Hebi high-Mg# peridotites (Fo > 91) show extreme variation from -27 to +21, in marked deviation from the δ(7)Li range of fresh MORB (+1.6 to +5.6) al...
متن کاملEffects of lateral variations in lithospheric thickness and mantle viscosity on glacially induced surface motion in Laurentia
The effects of lateral variations in lithospheric thickness and mantle viscosity on surface motions in Laurentia are investigated using the Finite Element method. Both a simple axisymmetric ice model and a more realistic ice deglaciation model (ICE4G) are used to investigate the effects of lateral heterogeneity. Beside the laterally homogeneous reference model, six laterally heterogeneous model...
متن کاملOlivine rheology, shear stress, and grain growth in the lithospheric mantle: Geological constraints from the Kaapvaal craton
The rheology of Earth’s mantle is a complex function that depends on, at least, temperature, pressure, stress, grain size, and water content. Understanding this functionality is of fundamental importance in mantle dynamics, but constraints from laboratory experiments entail considerable extrapolation. Here we propose a new observational approach based on a unique tectonic setting of the Kaapvaa...
